Protecting Brookie’s Home contains five SOL-aligned lessons that use brook trout to help students learn about air and water quality, watersheds, and conservation.
In Protecting Brookie’s Home, students learn about the brook trout and the importance of maintaining and protecting the environment of Virginia’s state fish. Students learn about this fish, which is a key “indicator species” for water quality and habitat protection. They examine the unique qualities of water and watersheds. Students analyze
Virginia’s water quality concerns: water chemistry, sedimentation, and changes in temperature. Finally, students investigate public policy regarding the protection of brookies and determine how they can become actively involved in these issues.
Protecting Brookie's Home was produced by a teacher team led by Tom Bentson, principal, and April Cascio of Olde Creek Elementary School in Fairfax County with grants from the Virginia Environmental Endowment and Dominion and the Virginia Council of Trout Unlimited.
